Hey guys,

In the near future I might be rebuilding a Super M transmission and final drive.

Is there a good source other than an IH dealership,if possible to get ALL of these bearings and seals for a total rebuild,or am I going to be going to a bearing and seal house buying these "piece by piece"??? (I would like to be able to get ALL of this stuff at the same location,if possible????? )

Or,is the dealerships the place to go???

Ive got a bearing house in Des Moines that is second to none. Very knowledgeable and excellent prices.

i did inner and outer axle bearings on my 450LP when i did it for under 400 total

this was even with the heavy duty roller bearings for the inners to support the bull gear

You go to an IH dealer and you're gonna pay through the nose

I doubt if there is a bearing 'kit' available. But your local NAPA store can get your bearings/seals.Just take the part #s to them.Take the # that is acctually on the bearing/seal.They have books/charts that will cross the #s.In nany cases the Napa bearing will be the same bearing as the OEM was.(Timkin,National,Fafnir....)

Yep.IH buys the bearing from the same place as does
NAPA/bearing house. They just put it in an IH box and
double/tripple the price.

Ok OLD F20,

They make a heavy duty inner bearing???? How are these different than the originals?

I have also heard of guys using the bearings like an "up graded" 560 use. Do you know the differences in these????

I am trying to get "educated" in to what I would need to be buying. ;)

what was explained to me were that original inners were a ball bearing type. the heavy duty version of that was a 'roller' bearing meaning is has the barrel shaped rollers instead of balls. they can handle a larger load on the face of them.

Price several places. In my area the Case/fiat dealer actually has the best price on many bearings, even better than napa, bearing houses ect. My John deere dealer has the best prices on seals. So in conclusion, don't automatically dismiss the dealers, you just need to check prices.

Years ago, when we actually had a dealer within reasonable driving distance, Napa prices were close to half the price of dealer bearings, FOR THE SAME BEARING! Last bearing I checked on at the now closed dealer was still higher than Napa, but Napa didnt have it in stock, and the dealer did, BUT I found it at my local guy, who is an old time parts store, for cheaper than either Napa or dealer, again, FOR THE SAME BEARING! Check around before buying any of them, as mentioned!

I recently replaced a front transmission bearing in one of my Farmall C's. Did some pricing and found Napa was the highest and Deere was the cheapest. This is definitely not always the case.

I just replaced the pilot brg. on the frt of the top shaft in my Super M. I took the old brg. to Napa and another parts store that can find anything and neither could. Motion Industries and a couple other online places said maybe 6 to 9 months for around $100, so I took the ten or fifteen mile drive up to Carter and Groenwalds IH expecting to shell out about a $150. They had it instock, $52.00. You might want to price IH first.

I have not had good results pricing ball bearings at the napa stores. Also, realize because a bearing fits does not mean it is the same capacity. Most IH bearings will have loading grooves in them as they have extra balls. Lot of lighter duty bearings do not have that. Probably work just fine in these older not worked hard any more tractors, but, the next thing is all the housings these bearings fit in are also worn so even at best, a new bearig won't last as long as if all parts were new. You will find this most prominent in the brake shaft, differential housings. Then, on the inside axles, IH went to the flat Bower roller bearings but they are not necessary unless you are going to work it long and hard. I would price around but you won't find a package deal, every bearing will be seperate and not all availalble at each bearing outlet. My experience.

The stock outer axle bearings (ST-310A?) don't cross to anything, anywhere.

I had to go to the 560 parts book to get a number that would cross, and NAPA's price was comparable to IH's.

Don't know of a package. Best see what you need first. To replace all the bearings in the transmission, differential, bull pinions and axles at dealer price would be around $1600. All new seals, gaskets, o rings and new oil will probably put you over $2000. Also if you get the roller inner axle bearing thats $350 each compared to the ball bearing at $140 each dealer price included in the $1600 price.
Anything other problem found will add on.
Some dealer stuff used to be made better. Not sure anymore. Just got a dealer transmission input shaft seal for a SM a few weeks ago. Same exact seal with the same number as a NAPA sold seal. $10 higher for a different package.

here is a phone number to a bearing whole sale guy, if he has it they are very cheap and he can ship right to your house. Have your bearing part number ready when you call, he can cross most IH number , New process, timken etc.1-800-285-6226

I really doubt if you need ALL new bearings. A few will be obviously worn and need replacement. Others will be ok. If you question some of them, take it to a bearing place and compare it to a new bearing, does not have to be exactly the same. I have done that more than once and decided the new one wasn't any better. On a much smaller scale I replaced all the bearings and seals in my Super A trans and finals mainly to see if I could quiet the transmission. It did help some, but still has the traditional noise. I replaced all the bearings in the top shaft in my Super M mainly because I needed the pilot bearing, and the others on that shaft were easy to get to. I had no desire to get into the differential, etc, because it was quiet. To answer your question --- With very few exceptions any good bearing place can get all your seals and bearings--however, as Pete mentioned some of the IH bearings, along with an occasional seal are better from CaseIH than the bearing stores.

Not always, I am not always satisfied with with the number cross I get, I have taken a couple back and bought from CaseIH. One example is the lower thrust bearing in the SM upper bolster--not quite the same.

Thanks for ALL the replys guys! I will be writing some phone #s down for future reference. ;)We will see how it goes ?

When I did my 600 Ford a few years back,ALMOST ALL of it's Trans/differential bearings were "wiped out"but I think it was due to lack of lubrication?

It works both ways. CIH now offers ST262 (basically a delco generator bearing) as a replacement for the ST506 thrust bearing in H/M, etc. governors. Dealer tells me ST262 specs. haven't been changed. Better options can be sourced elsewhere.

Mike, watch your country of origin from all vendors if you are leary of items manufactured in certain areas of the world.

Boy, I haven't replaced one of those thrust bearings in years but I sure would not want a plain radial ball bearing in there. It would most likely not last very well and not be very sensitive with thrust on it. Actually, when I was actively repairing those old governors, the bearing came right with the sleeve. Yes, you have to watch what parts they sub you to.
