Farmall SC bleeding green

I charged the battery, filed the points, and fired up dad's super C to bring it down to the house for some maintenance. When I got home this is what I found. I think its the head gasket.

You are very fortunate your Dad didn't replace that rubber gasket at the bottom of the oil filter can. That could have ruined the bearings. Drain both the coolant and the oil, pull the head and let us know. I had a 1942 Farmall H that had coolant in the oil. I pulled the head and then the pistons and sleeves. #1 cylinder had a hole in the side from a broken connecting rod somewhere in it's lifetime. Ended parting that one out.

My A looks like that although not that bad. The oil has been clear and the radiator is clean so I haven't been in a hurry with it. I suppose I could start by tightening things and see what happens.

Whats the problem with the gasket that it used for the filter been using them since 1947 and havent had any problems yet must be missing something.

I think what The Red is saying that if the gasket was making a good seal he may not have noticed that the tractor had a belly full of anti freeze. Thats how I took it. Not that the gaskets are bad.He is lucky that it is seeping.

Looks like the antifreeze is running down the outside of the block and pooling on the filter housing to me.

If it's pushing that out from inside, the engine is RUINED. Gonna need a complete rebuild.

I need to clean a spot in the shop so I can get the tractor inside. Hopefully this is just leaking on the outside. Maybe I'll crack open the oil drain plug today and see if I get any green.

I cracked open the oil drain plug and didn't get any antifreeze. I hope thats a good sign. We called a local parts supplier to see if they have a head gasket in stock. Should here back this afternoon.

Here's my suggestion. First I would loosen the engine oil drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan. If any anti- freeze comes out stop and pull the engine apart. It's got an internal leak that could be disasterous if you run the engine for any amount of time. If oil only comes out tighten the plug. Then I would clean the engine with gunk or some other good engine cleaner. Let it dry, start the engine and watch for seepage. It should be obviuos where the leak is when there is no grease and dirt to confuse the issue.

I confimed the leak is from the Head gasket. I cleaned the area off with some solvent and fired it up. With in a couple of minutes some antifreeze began to leak. Also getting a bit of oil leaking. The new gasket should be here this week.

There's usually more to it than just a simple leaky gasket. Usually the gasket is leaking for a reason.
