final drives

I replaced the seals on the pinion shafts and put new sleeves on the worn sections. When I replaced the final drives I find I cannot turn the hubs. They should turn freely and they did before I slid the shafts into the differenrial and tightened the bolts on the castings. I can feel the backlash in the gears but they appear to be bound up on something. Before I open the tranny cover to see what is up I would like to know if anyone has any idea on this problem. Any help would be appreciated....Thanks

Did the transmission gear shift get moved to an "In Gear" position during the work? Did you have the transmission cover off? Turning the axle flange will be much harder than with a wheel on the axle? If you can feel gear backlash by turning the axle flange, it is probably in the bull/pinion gears. Not knowing how you went about putting the seals in leaves out details that may point to your problem.

I will pull the tranny cover to see what is jammed. The seals were set straight and true using a seal driver. The final drives both turned freely and entered the differential easilly. All I can figure is that someting is jammed up in the differential as the tranny is in neutral

Unless you had the transmission cover off during the brake replace, no need to take it off now. If you did have the cover off, one of the shifting forks could be out of the sliding gear allowing the transmission to be in two gears at once. Agree with Brownie that it may be brake bands are too tight. Loosen the adjustment or just pull the pin at the connection to the pedal and try turning.
