MD power steering advice needed

My brother gave me the Behlen PS system off one of his MDs I'm going to put it on my MD. My question is, any tricks when taking off the mag bracket and repaceing with hyd. pump as to getting the pump in correct position about timing. I know to get engine to #1 TDC. I don't want to have to remove the front engine cover to line up the gears. Any suggestions?

Just guessing here but the pump has a drive slot for the magneto on the back right?

Make note of the orientation of the drive slot on the magneto adapter and duplicate that when you install the hydraulic pump. If you match them up the magneto should be timed exactly as before.

For about $25 you can get a compact digital angle gauge from Harbor Freight. Might be worth it to measure the angle of the slot before you pull the old adapter and install the pump.

yes i've thought about measuring the angle. do you know how much the drive moves as the gears slide in togeather?

It moves about ten to twelve degrees, or about one tooth"s worth on the gear on the hydraulic pump. And no, you don"t have to remove the front cover. Don"t make something hard out of it, if you are off by a tooth, just take it off and move it, enjoy the challenge, the reward is worth it when it fires up and you"ve got it timed, and it"s got power steering!

You can hardly get it wrong because if you are one tooth off it is a big difference. At least that is what I thought on my SMTA.

He's right it should be blatantly obvious if you're a tooth off.

Another thing you can do is TAKE A PICTURE before you remove the original adapter.
