M hydraulic 2 way valve

I purchased a 2 way hydraulic valve recently off a salvaged H, I guess they call it a "Christmas Tree Valve" I was given all hoses etc. but I notice the hose that feeds it has an oriface installed in it, the guy I got it from says it needs to be there for the valve to work properly has anyone else ever seen this or heard of it I dont want to run it till I get some advise from someone who has used one before

D Slater is correct. It is an open center system. No orifice is used in the supply or return. The only restriction in the entire system might be a lowering restrictor check valve used only when equipment could drop too rapidly. Jim

What's the correct way to use one of these. I have one on my M. Does it need both hands to work the hydraulic lever and the Christmas tree lever or is there a way around that?

The regular Lift rod is locked back in the lift position. (it can stay there because the open center just circulates fluid at no pressure when it is connected to the Christmas tree valve.
A bungy cord is commonly used, but I like a small hose clamp around a cut piece of fuel hose placed on the rod just above the bracket about 1/2" long to lock it back. This allows an emergency shutoff if needed by pushing the rod through the split hose. Jim

On messicks go to farmall M, then hydraulics, then number 288. When that picture of parts comes up, part number 2 was used to lock the liftall rod back when the remote control attachments were first installed on a tractor.

I Bet your right about the restricting the "return" side on a cylinder Jim???(Heavy equipment can really "slam" to the ground if your not easy on the control rod.)

We used a regular open center valve. By tieing the rod back the pressure port goes to the inlet side of the valve, then the other side just returns to the fill tube. This lets you have 2-way hydraulics for pressure up and down. The implement will not drop that fast this way. and you can put down pressure on items that need that.

I went one step farther, I took the single valve off and put a double valve on my M. The second has a float on the extra valve. I'm trying to figure out a way to make the oil capacity more.
I've got an idea how, still need the felt thou.
