I had a similar experience with a WR9 last fall. Tractor had starting tank, manifold heat shield, shutters w/ complete linkage, etc. Hadn't run in no telling when. After all new belts, hoses, tune up when I drained the big tank the few gallons in it had no smell I could detect. Now I know what old gas smells like. And no deposits in tank either as is common with old gas. Put fresh gas in a she fired right up, ran good. As unlikely as it seems I gotta wonder if what ran out of this tractor was distillate too. |

| Roger, to answer your original question, my best guess is that distillate disappeared no later than the late 1950s. I don't know for sure; I came along too late to use distillate fuel. My reasoning is based on the last IH tractors produced setup at the factory to use distillate was the 350-450 series in 1957-58 era. My fuel tank was clean also and the carb wasn't too bad either. The tractor also had the oldest style of Champion W14 spark plugs I have ever seen. When it ran last nobody knows. |
