The steering wheel works like a torque multyplyer and is supposed to make the tractor steer easier. I don"t recall the manufacture of it . Saw one sell on ebay awhile back for over two hundred dollars. It was kind of a fore runner to power steering.

Aren't they rubber mounted to absorb the shock from hitting a bunp, ect. Have one on a Orange John Deere 40 used by the state to mow road ditches.

What it actually does is stop bump steer from breaking your wrist. There are springs wound around the steering shaft that lock on. The stub shaft sticking down from the housing holds it secure when mounted correctly. Turning the wheel unwinds the spring and allows the shaft to turn. It was supposed to stop bump steer and hold the front wheels strait so you didn't have to fight the wheel all day while plowing.

Found this one on a 35 F20

They are for shock not to make it steer easyier you cant do that with a steering wheel unless you have a gear reduction set-up in the hub.
