Farmall 140 Will Not Crank

It did start and run fine until yesterday..It started and ran fine for a few minutes, but due to its cold nature it died when I started to takeoff, tried to restart it and the starter would not turn, I took cover off of battery and tried to jump start, starter still would not turn, I noticed some spark out of the postive battery terminal, this morning I replace the complete cable and ends, from postive post to starter,,same thing, nothing. The tractor years ago was converted to 12 volt, it has a key, but still the pull start. Any suggestions, the key switch, the switch on top of the starter, or maybe the starter, I put a light on all connections and I have juice,,,,,,Thanks

If Zach's method works, and if it continues, there is a new style starter drive that cures most of them. It has a different method of operation and is cushioned. Jim

Those pull type starter switches are known to get bad and sometimes need cleaned or replaced. I would remove to 2 screw holding it to the starter and clean up the part on the starter and the inside of the switch with emery cloth and see if that fixes your problem

also take starter out and see if there is a mouse nest jammed between starter and ring gear, have had that happen a few times to me and once to my friends tractor.

Chances are the starter is licked on the ring gear take the bolts out where it mounts to the bell housing and wiggle it. That should get it loose can happen in cold weather easy.

Before you loosen the bolts on the starter, try just rocking the wheels with the tractor in high gear. If the starter is locked, it will not move the fan until it the starter pops out. If rocking the wheels does not do it at first then loosen the two starter bolts, do not remove them, just loosen and rock the wheels with it in high gear. You will hear a pop when the solenoid springs back out of engage and the fan will start moving. Tighten the bolts and it will crank then. It was a common problem for the C-113 and C-123 motors and happened so seldom we did not make an attempt to remedy and kept a box end wrench (I think a 5/8") in the tool box for just this problem. You can also check to see if the starter is locked by using the hand crank. If it is locked, you may not be able to turn the engine with the hand crank, but I have been able to unlock a starter a few times with just the crank. It all depends on how hard it is jammed in. Once it locks up, do not pull on the starter rod again until it has been unlocked, you just bind it in harder.
