300 shift lever

I have a very worn and rewelded shift lever for a 300, it is no longer functional, the part # is 364162R1, have tried IH dealer and part is no longer available, I would like to purchase new or used before i try to repair, if anyone knows where i might find this part or if anyone is willing to sell one, please let me know, any help would be appreciated, thanks

Hard to find one of those shifters in perfect condition due to the twisting motion when shifting those. Other than the end worn, slot where the pin goes through gets worn so the gear shift will twist. Also the pin hole in the swivel housing gets worn.
Have a few I would call good working condition, but not ideal.

The shifter tip on mine was in okay shape when I got it but the pin was badly worn. I got one of the sloppy shifter repair kits on ebay for $20 which has a new pin and it made a world of difference.

Having it welded up and reshaped is easiest.
Find the sloppy shift kit mentioned and all will be fine. Jim

Ok, going to ask some really dumb questions,I think iam looking at this all wrong!,my thinking is this, when i removed shifter from transmission plate and saw the shifter lever end rewelded i assumed that this is the damaged part?, my 1st question is which way does the shift lever face?, I assumed by your photo of yesterday that the flared end of shift lever would move the shift rails?,i dont have any flaring, thus causing my problem Ihave more questions ill post later, thanks Jim!!!!!!

The lever in the illustration is worn, but has the correct demensions on it. The shift lever moves into and out of gears (as you know) forward and back. The tip of the lever that fits into the shift rails moves rearward when the lever moves forward. The tip is flat on the left and right, and longer front to back. If the tip was a nickle the head would be to the right and tails to the left when sitting on the tractor seat. This pushes and pulls in the shift rails. The tip is made a little too big by welding then grinding it to fit in the slot (neutral for left and right) and able to move only one rail at a time forward and back. Jim

ok, just as i thought, next question, would a shift lever from a H or M work, reason i ask is there is a local salvage yard near me and they say they have the part, but i know they will try to sell me one from either,a H or M and not a 300

Not sure if the lower end is the same or not. The upper end is obviously way different, as the H shifter is shorter and does not have that big curve in it. If the lower end fits, the rest don't matter, unless you're a stickler for "correctness".

H and M won't work. You have the wrong shifter number if its for a regular 300. Number you posted is two piece. Farmall 400 will work. Should find a number near the lower end of the shifter. It will be a different number than whats in the parts book.
If your shifter looks like the upper one in the picture or worse it needs work. Other one is close to normal. Sometimes the slot you see in the shifter will be worn 1/4 inch or more wider on some. Welding and some machine work should fix the one you have unless realy junked.

Zach saw those for sale before and wondered what new parts they have and is anything in them oversized? Thanks.

you are correct, mine is one piece, the one you show in the upper picture looks like a gem compared to the one i have, no part# on mine, you say a 400 lever will work?, also mine has been repaired already by someone !

Yes thats the correct IH part number for a regular one for a 300 through 450.
But that number is for more than just a shift shaft is the reason its different than one found on a shifter.

If you don't find a better shift lever, I have one from a 300. Bottom is fine, top where it should have the big curve has been straightened out. Son that grew to about 6 ft 17 in decided to make it taller. Worked except you couldn't use choke & fourth gear!.It has been in the shop under the workbench since I switched it for a curved one.
