Any one use Case IH 80W90 or 85W140 (not Hytran) for a gear oil change, or John Deere Torq Gard? Gotta change mine and I'm not happy with the choices...

Cheap Traveler or Coastal is the only thing readily available and synthetic is priced high and not readily available.

Tractor is a stock puller, no farm use. Thanks.

85W-140 is a good choice as it provides a good cushion. Not the best for deep winter, but it is what I would use. Jim

If it is just for pulling use put gallon jugs in one at a time until the rear end stops growling. This should be about 3 gallons.

Would 3 gallons cover enough of the bottom to lube the trans shafts and bearings in the input shaft? It seems like a small amount to be sure of essential lube. Jim

Since the M uses 13 gallons of oil in the rearend & tranny, 3 gallons will NOT do much to lubricate anything... The tranny will not get any lubrication with such a small amount in there. There has to be a sufficient amount of oil for the gears to sling around which will lube the bearings and gears that are above the oil level.

But what about those particular brands (case IH and Torq gard). I want something that will be good quality and last...

The cheapest oil you can get now is better quality than what was available when the tractor was new. If you change the oil now I bet you will never have to change it again.

And another thing, the tractor worked hard all day, every day for many years after it was made. It has worked a lot harder than it ever will at tractor pulls. In all seriousness, it is my opinion that there is no need for fancy expensive synthetic or name brand oil, the tractor will not care and will run just as well on the cheap no name stuff.

Most stop somewhere between 3 and 5 when using the tractor JUST FOR PULLING. Enough gets carried around to give you enough lube for 300'. If you really want to play it safe put some of that Lucus stuff in it from the counter at NAPA. The other thing to do would be putting one more gallon in after the noise stops.
