Painting Generator

I'm ordering (from this site) a rebuilt generator for my '44 H. This tractor is just for parade/recreational use and I was wondering if most people paint the generator red, or leave it black? I want the tractor in show condition (everything on it has been stripped down to bare metal and repainted).

Thanks,

Jim

Authenticity could be considered both ways. Originally it was red. If replaced it was often left black. If rebuilt from a shop, it was either red or black. if rebuilt at a factory, black. Were it mine, I would paint it red. at what point does one call attention to a rebuilt OEM component. Jim

If you have stripped everything and painted it red, then paint the generator red -- I do the same thing.

If you want it "show" condition I'd leave it black. Yes, originally from the factory it was painted red along with all the belts and hoses. Nobody likes that look.

The same reason we leave cadmium plated bolts, spark plug wires, fuel lines, wiring harness, carburetors, and all other kind of things unpainted Jim. Beauty is in the eye of the re-builder.

I'm with the Cowman and like a little contrast to just everything red including all the rubber parts. Being black is more in line with the history of a 50 to 70 year old tractor as a generator usually has a shorter life then the tractor. I'm restoring a 1958 Farmall 240 and painted my rebuilt generator and starter black with new Delco-Remy ID tags. Original ID tags were painted over in red like everything else at the factory. It's your choice and especially on the H it isn't visible anyway if installed in the original factory location up under the hood, Hal.
