Rear-end clunk

My 544 utility makes a distinct clunk when going from forward to reverse or vice-versa unless I let the clutch out slowly. It seems to be coming from the right rear. I know this is bad but is anyone willing to venture a guess as to how bad? Can I keep using the machine until spring?

Bearing out in transmission, allowing extra play in the drive line, shows up at the wheels.

Just a guess, had a Moline that did that.

Check rear wheel mounting hardware first! May have loose or broken bolts/wedges/lockwashers. Try the easy fixes before you panic! Good luck. Armand

I would still double check wheel bolts and etc. Not always easy to see. Get someone to help check. Been there done that.

The lugs can fool you.

Had the clunk on my Super A. Checked all bolts and they were "tight" but they were bottomed out on the threads!

Even though the bolts were tight the lugs were loose. To get the lugs tight I ended up adding 2-3 lock washers on each lug bolt.

> I would still double check wheel bolts and etc.

You nailed it. They didn"t seem loose until I jacked it up, but now the clunk is gone.

John: Don't you just love it when you get lucky and it is a simple and cheap fix? By the way for future reference for anybody with problems don't forget to check wheel weight mounting bolts for being loose if so eguiped. Just a thought. Armand

Be aware that lock washers can,do, and will break so I would find different spacers or shorter bolts as soon as posible! Armand

Know of a fella that sent his tractor to have rear end fixed. The cure was tighten the wheel weights.Problem the tech removed the cab before he checked the obvious.
