560 Transmission

On the 560 transmission drive shaft and counter shaft was there an updgrade to switch those over to a tapered roller bearing from the ball bearings?
Thanks,
Jim

Not that I recall. Transmission main shaft rear bearing was changed from a ball bearing to a roller bearing. Also that bearing retainer and the transmission housing was changed from 3 to 4 bolt mounting before to long into production. Other changes were from differential on back.

The big infamous recall was for the inner axle bearing. The original ball bearing was replaced by a barrel type roller bearing.

The flat bower roller bearing on pinion shaft replaced the ball bearing. I am racking my brain here now as I am not sure that it was included in the original up date pkg. I think it came along shortly after but I may be wrong on that. The roller bearing on inside axle was not with the package and came later as did another bearing improvement package. Original tapered roller change over on differential had a high failure rate also so those bearing were changed to a crowned end tapered roller bearing. I know, I put in several sets. The tapered shim on right hand side of differential was included with that later bearing upgrade pkg. That pkg was not a give away except it was at a very low cost to customer. In other words, not all improvemets came at one time and it was not a recall in the sense that customers brought them in at their convenience within a rather long time frame. Took quite a while to get them all done. Been many years so don't remember all the details but I did do ten of them that I can remember.

Think the roller on the main shaft was a change in production. If I remember correct the rear housing with 4 mounting bolts for the housing the main shaft bearing goes in, and not sure about the roller started out on 660 tractors. Then IH started using the same housing on 660 and 560 tractors. Main roller bearing would work in others though. Found some in 400 tractors.

Some time during that time frame, after the changes were incorporated into production, while at a service training session in St. Paul, Mn one of the higher up's in co. from Chicago came in to visit with us. He said he kept one of those Bower roller bearings right on his desk so he could look at it every day as it got him out of a lot of hot water so to speak. It did, as we were seeing that old ball bearing fail on the pinion shaft in the 400-450's etc even before the 560 hit the ground running. I actually put a update package for a 560 into a 450 gas tractor as customer was upset at second failure in the 450 already. My old boss made out like a bandit on that deal as he kept all the old parts and sold most of them for half price to customer on a 50-50 repair on an old M-diesel. Never forget that one. Went from disgruntled customer to feeling like he made a heck of a deal on parts we had almost nothing invested in.
