1000 rpm PTO

My 1566 like so many others has the 1k rpm
pto. Friend of mine took off the 1k shaft off of
his and bolted on a 540 shaft and runs his
round bailer and other stuff at a lower engine
rpm. Sounds good on the surface, but are there
any hidden problems in doing that? (That"s
assuming the tach works)

At 540 RPM your engine can deliver more torque than the shaft can handle (that"s why they went to 1000). You"ll be ok as long as you keep that in mind.

You can swap out that 1000 for a dual 540/1000 setup. Cost about $750 around here, easy to do, bolts right in.

these pto units are supposed to run at the speed the shaft is for as the psi. required to properly lock up the clutch pack can not be reached at the lower RPM. clutch pack failure will eventually happen if proper pto speed is not used.

It's not a drop in swap in a 15.

There are differences in the PTO input shaft sizes and linkage is different unless you get a later PTO with the hydraulic applied brakes.

Yes, there are problems with running a 540 implement off the 1000 PTO at "half throttle."

For one, the adapter throws off the angles of the universal joints, so you will probably get chatter when going around corners under load.

It's also much harder to maintain a constant speed at 1/2 throttle. This is particularly evident when running a PTO generator. The engine doesn't react quickly enough to the governor when more engine power is required, and ends up surging up and down.

If it's working for him, then good for him.

He said "lower engine rpm" so I concluded that he's just using an adapter on the 1000RPM PTO shaft.

What I'm referring to is the removal of just the outer splined shaft (3 bolts) and installing the 540 version.

Same difference. You might not have the knuckle-snapping on turns but you'll still have possible issues getting smooth, consistent power to the implement.

I've never seen a short splined shaft with 540PTO splines. All I have ever seen are adapters that fit over the 1000PTO shaft. Was it custom made?

Stock. Only 3 bolts hold them on. Only takes minutes to
change. He had a couple he kept from parted tractors.
