400 fast hitch depth control

With an early non draft control fast hitch, is the hydraulic cylinder on the right side of the tractor really necessary? If you're plowing, how often would you actually adjust the depth control? I've considered a ratchet jack in its place, but is the cylinder necessary? I've plowed with a 3 point with draft control before and have utilized those on the go adjustments for soil variations but without draft control, the 400 would seem to me to be a set it and forget it thing.
We've had the lock pin in place for years so I know you don't need the cylinder in place for every day drawbar use.

thanks

Though difficult to master the combination of lever tweaking, it is possible to set the angle of attack when plowing to optimize traction with that setup.
It also lets the implement be raised dramatically while in transport. I would rather have it than the inefective draft control on the later hitch, and the X50 series. (they are genuinely worthless) Jim

I agree and would never remove that cylinder from my 400. I have plowed many acres with my 400 and 311 14" fast hitch plow. I used that lever a lot, especially when lowering the plow. You can tilt the plow down in hard ground to make it go in better. I do have the gauge wheel on the plow so don't really adjust the main FH cylinder after dropping the plow down. I have tried the same plow in my 450-D and it sure works better on the 400. Keep it on. Al

I have a manual for a fast hitch reversable (two way) McCormick disc plow that used a cylinder to reverse the plow right to left. The manual states that for 300/400 tractors with only fast hitch and and draft cylinder remote, to use an available rachet jack in place of the right cylinder, since that cylinder would be used on the plow.
When I get back to the states, I will scan the manual of this unuasal disc plow and email to those who want it. We used one on our 400LP and my mom still had the LP attachment and plow manuals and gave to me last month.
