Hey guys. Was just wondering what standard flat rate is for replacing a TA on a 3088? Also going to be replacing the main clutch and rear main seal. Also just a general question on TA's. Is it pretty much standard to replace the entire TA assembly even if just one part of it has failed? On this one the one way sprag locks up only when it feels like it. The anti freewheeling clutches look like they got a bit hot but nothing is warped. This the first TA job I have done. I have the IH service book. Thanks guys!

I would buy a complete clutch kit and the complete heavy duty ta kit. Replace the pto and hydraulic pump. Also put in an mcv kit while you are there.

When I first started working on TAs there were no rebuilt units available so the only choice was to replace the parts that were needed. The first rebuilt parts were the gear and carrier that the sprag operated against. I rebuilt many units with reconditioned gears and carriers and clutch kits from IH. Shortly after Hy-Capacity, BMD, and others started to offer rebuilt units they started to offer heavy duty units which had improvements beyond standard parts. Once the HD units became available we seldom rebuilt units that were not in warranty. The HD units allowed us to sell a better TA which installed quicker and had a warranty beyond what the dealership would offer. After opening my own shop in 1985 I don't recall ever just replacing parts in the TA assembly. The rebuilt units were just a much better deal and carried a warranty that did not just depend on my shop.

TA Assembly, R&R or Replace: 15.2
With auxiliary fuel tank, add: .8

TA overhaul: 17.4
With auxiliary fuel tank, add: .8

Rear crankshaft seal: 6.7
Subtract split engine to center section: 5.0

No additional time for clutch replacement since the clutch and flywheel are already removed to replace rear seal.

Good practice would be to also overhaul the MCV assembly.
MVC overhaul: 3.3
Since the MCV will already be removed for the TA replacement subtract MCV pump replacement: 2.3

Flat rate time for a TA replacement should end up something like this:

15.2 - TA replacement
0.8 - With auxiliary fuel tank
1.7 - Replace rear engine crankshaft seal
1.0 - Overhaul MCV
18.7

Add to this the actual time for additional items such as cleaning and additional time required because of rusted and damaged fasteners. Also add time for any additional repairs that needed. If the tractor is in relatively good shape I would expect the job to flat rate out at about 25 hours

Like they say, can't beat that explanation with a stick. Owen works faster than me now days though.
