Battery Boxes (Top Cover) for H

OK guys, Got a new battery box & top cover for my 53 Super H, battery box under gas tank, are you guys leaving the top cover off of the box ? The problem I have is that the rubber bumpers in the lid, are right on top of the battery post. Now I can take them out of the reciever in the lid, & that will let the lid fit the box, however the terminal & cable fitting is more than likely make contact with the lid in this spot.Obviously not a problem contacting the Possitive post(Still Possitive Ground), but not good contacting the Negative post. Tried two different covers, 1 with the off set bumpers, & the alined bumpers- same issue. Could have gone with a smaller battery, but would also be less CC amps & didn't fit/fill the box, So what's fix that most of you use ? Thanks as always for any & all suggestions. AL

The box is designed for a "Group 1" battery.

Problem is, Group 1 batteries have gotten larger over the years. Mostly taller. Hence your problem.

My solution: Mouse pads. Get some thin ones with the hard plastic surface and lay them on the terminals to insulate them from the lid.

Al - I ran into the same problem on my '53 SH (apparently group 1 batteries are taller today than they were in the 1950's).

My solution was to cut an insulating pad from an old mudflap and glue it to the underside of the cover. It insulates the cover from the battery posts, but the cover still "closes" when in place atop the box.
