Carb cleaner

What are you guys using for a carb cleaner you can pour into the gas tank. I mentioned Sea foam here recently and several guys thought the stuff was useless. This site is where I first heard of Sea foam. You guys got stuff you think works. I've got a couple of small engines I want to try before I have to tear them apart but I 'd like to add to the old Farmalls as well.

I like Sea Foam myself, though it is expensive. It has helped the engine on my planer and I think it may have also helped the engine on the band mill but that was not running so badly to begin with.

i have used sea foam too, works well. also use gumout, and the napa brand carb cleaners. i keep a gallon jug of marvel mystery oil around, seems to work good too. and (dont tell anybody) but stihl 2 stroke chain saw oil mixed 50:1 works good too. it has a fuel stabilizer additive in it too. none of them will fix a major problem, but they can clean up some problems caused by bad/old fuel.

E85 is the best fuel system cleaner there is, and your old Farmalls will like it.

Those that knock it, B&D and a couple of others, apparently have never tried it. Ive used it in everything from my lawnmowers to my wifes Buick and it does what it says it will do. You may have to use a second can, but it works for me! Now, what Mr t said is true also. I run E85 in all of my tractors. I ran one of my Ms late last year for the first time in 5 or 6 years. (Other than a yearly start up) Already had about 3 gallons of gas with Seafoam for stabilizing, but I added 10 gallons of E85 to that. The longer it ran, the smoother and less hesitant it became. The only downside is it absorbs water, so at the end of the year, usually arounf Oct. I drain it all out of them, and repalce with gas.

Best thing about sea foam, it won't hurt anything but you pocket book. Ya, I do use some occasionally, usually just as a kind of preservative in seldom used engine sitting around in hot weather. It is kind of like sludge in an engine. Only way to get it out is to take it apart and clean it out. My old boss poured tons of crap in an old car he was driving to work. When he finally gave up, I pulled the engine and the push rods were channeling in the sludge. It didn't even clean the oil pan.

if you are not in a great hurry, drain the gas from the carb and tank; pour in mineral spirits and crank the engine a few turns. let sit for a few days, be sure that mineral spirits are still in tank, if not add some. crank again and let sit for another day. empty and fill with fuel. should do it good.
