Hi, may have chance to pick up a 39 H that "burns more oil than gas". Owner says it has the trough and correct set. Are these "rare"? meaning I know they are a little different than my 40 H but not much Worth picking up? how many were made with early seat? |

| I'd like to hear more from paulginmn, but unique features of a '39 also included (if I am correct) rubber motor mounts, and no "lip" on the clutch pedal. Can't think of other differences (other than the push button "kill" on the magneto), but seems there were more. kelly |

The grill is different on a `39. Has a spot welded ledge for the hood to rest on vs. later grill that has 1 piece molded ledge. Light bar on `39 has a cast iron spacer for U-bolt that mounts the light bar to the steering support post. The light switch is not a round knob on a `39, it`s a flip lever. I have mine yet and `39`s are harder than heck to find with that type switch still on them. The PTO is 1 1/8" on `39`s, dont know when IH changed to 1 3/8".
I wouldn`t say `39`s are rare, but like it was said earlier, to find one with all the `39 only features is pretty special-at least to me. Most `39`s haven`t survived with all these features intact. There`s no doubt to me a `39 H with the unique `39 parts intact is worth more than later H`s. |

| so with around 10,000 or so made in 39, how can you even say that they are 'rare'????
i would think if there were maybe 1000 or less built thats what you could call rare |

| im my opionion I would say a rare 39 H or M is one that is the way they came out with all the little different unique parts I have yet to see one that has everything. My M is close but know of a couple things I dont have. |

| there is a bunch of things different on the 39 h and m models. I have both and have spent a ton of time reserching and collecting all the original parts for both of mine. Its really hard to find one that has all the orignal stuff left on it. A good seat assembly should bring over $300 I gave $375 for the one on my M |

| | I happened upon two of them last year and added them to the "collection". One had been sitting a while but runs nicely. The other one is pretty rough and majorly stuck, but with a decent looking transmission. Both have 4 digit serial #'s Not worth a whole lot more than a regular H, just interesting for being a first year of something. |

| Transmission top and seat was used to serial # 15697 on a 1940 model. don't know what its worth, but if you want a complete original some other parts are just as hard or harder to find than the seat if not on it. |

| From the serial number list there were about 10,000 1939's out of about 400,000 H's made. So somewhat rare and a little bit more collectible. Not really worth anymore than any other H unless it has the ORIGINAL equipment: starting tank, distallate manifold, shroud and radiator shutters. |

Farmall Boy isn't really dead on with that statement. IIRC the only thing that is '39 only is the starting tank valve and fuel tank sediment bowl. All the other distillate stuff is the same from 39-52.
They are always worth more than a regular H if they have the trough deck and seat. Send me an email if you don't want it. |

| I wasn't saying ONLY 39's were distallate. I was saying that all or most had that arrangement and finding a '39 with it still intact makes it more collectible. |

I know, what I am saying is radiator shutters, heat shields, and most of the other distillate stuff was the same for the entire production run. Steering wheels, decks, mag shuoff (or is it only the little guys that run a cable?) and seat assemblies were not. Those items are a lot more important than the distillate items.
ie The radiator shutters were always SHUTTER AND OPERATING BAR, complete (Mfr. no. 17250) from day one. At least there is no serial number break to show any difference. Maybe the operating rod was different. |

There is a big notch below the seat. See a '39 and there will be no doubt. |
