12 Volt Farmall M Generators - Lucas & Delco-Remy

I have a baler with a 12 Volt motor to put the twine in position. The IH 844S tractor had (yet another) hydraulic malfunction and we had to use the Farmall M to bale. Not convenient with 6 Volt. The M has all Lucas electrics, so I got a 12 Volt Lucas Generator and Regulator which look identical to the 6 Volt equipment and just bolted them straight on… very easy. The other M has all Delco equipment, so the generator bracket is completely different. Is there a Delco-Remy 12 Volt generator and regulator (or cutout) which can be fitted to look identical to the 6 Volt equipment? I know an alternator is a good solution, but I like generators - easy and cheaper to repair.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes they arent hard to get. Some will have a smaller dia at the brush area but the bolt pattern for mounting is the same. Rebuilds arent chaep and they want a core. Where do you live as T.H.E. Co will send you all you want. So will any other dealer who can get them from Harvey B ros as they are huge rebuilders.

I dunno, generators may be "easy and cheaper to repair" but only because you have to repair them! I'd argue "easy" with you any day of the week, but I digress...

What you'd be doing is turning something that is already oddball and rare in your neck of the woods into something even more oddball and rare. If you've got to import a Delco generator and regulator from the States, can you get parts to fix it in Australia?

One major thing about a "locally"-sourced alternator is, you can get parts and/or another alternator a lot more easily and quickly, and be up and running instead of waiting on parts to come by slow boat.

Give me the Delco # off your 6 volt generator and I will see if I can find out any useful info.
# should look like this 1100501,1100051,1100531,1100042 or other but 7 digits.

How much current does the baler draw? If requires only a few amps, or higher amps briefly for each bale it produces, it will likely work fine simply by sticking a fully-charged 12 volt battery on the baler to power the twine positioner.

It will certainly be easier and cheaper than trying to locate, mount up and wire a 12 volt Delco generator and VR.

Farmall MD tractors sold here in the US had 12v systems. From those (mine was 1948) all the way to several X50 and higher number series were 12v gen and regulator. Should be common here Jim

Thanks folks. The original generator number is 1101355 8J30. It has no regulator, just a cutout mounted on the top. I know that alternators produce more current and work reliably, but I just can't like the look of them on my old Farmalls. I like the way a generator looks like it was meant to be there. As to reliability are there more problems with the cutout type than those fitted with a regulator? Some Lucas generators with cutout only could be a pain, but the regulated ones very rarely go wrong. The original on our first Farmall M finally needed a rebuild after fifty years service.
Thanks,
