Farmall H lift-all drive shaft loose

The driveshaft that drives my Farmall H lift-all is loose. I had replaces the seal on the transmission side. You can shake it inside of the couplers. It is starting to get a little worn. Any ideas at a fix? Thanks!!

Is the entire coupling shaft worn or just the flat keys? If it were the keys you could weld it up and grind it down. It it's the whole thing you could have a new one machined or just buy a used one for like $5.

Aligning the slots and bars with a hose clamp then drilling through the cotter key holes to a little bigger size and using a close fitting bolt with locktite on the nut would improve it a lot. Jim

I removed the round nut on the transmission side to replace the seal. It had never been off and the shaft was tight in between the two round nuts. When I ran the tractor, the round nut on the transmission side would tighten itself a little and the shaft would become a little loose. I tried running a hydraulic cylinder with the lift-all and the round nut would still screw in a little and make the shaft loose. I haven't used the tractor much but I can see shiney places on the Lift-All driveshaft because it is now a little loose. I am thinking to put blue Locktight in the round nut, install the Lift-All driveshaft and then take a pipewrench and unscrew the Lift-All driveshaft and round nut on the transmission. That would force the shaft/ round nuts to be tight. Could I make the Lift-all driveshaft/ round nuts combo too tight when by unscrewing the round nut and compressing them together?

It sounds like there was a problem with the couple being too tight before you took it apart for repairs. The coupler should be loose when properly installed. About the only problem I've ever seen with them is if the cotter pins are left too loose they can move and cause wear. After about twenty years like that they can wear enough to fall out.

Both drive flanges are driven CW in rotation. This tightens them both while in service. If they are loosened, they will tighten immediatly on Liftall use. If they are too far apart, (I don't see how) a thin washer like shim could be used to get them closer.. Jim

How tight should the driveshaft be between the round nuts? After running the tractor I could still shake the driveshaft. When I slide the rings in, the shaft would then fall out. Thanks!
