Front wheels on H

Ive got a question on the different front wheels on the H.
Was the more popular version the only one that had multiple settings? If not what was the purpose of the less popular style? Was it a particular year? I'm sure its been addressed in this Forum, but I can't remember seeing it. Thanks

The variable spacing wheels were a later option which eventually became standard. Someone might know the year, there was no serial break far as I know. Nothing more than an improvement for those that wanted it. IH decided that there was no need for the older ones.

I think the variable spacing wheels were an option from the beginning, but because it was an extra cost option, the dealers did not order the Hs from the factory with that option.

Could be, the parts books are not clear on that. I have a 48 C with the old style and a 50 C with the variable ones. My dad had a 47 H with the variable wheels.

I have a 1940 H with the variable width wheels. Casting codes on the front hubs end in "J".
