WD-9 runs terrible on gas

I have a 1949 WD-9..It is hard starting on gas and smokes black and dies after about 30 seconds, looking for some input...thanks in advance..

The black smoke tells me too much fuel. The carb is not adjusted properly or the float is sticking and putting too much fuel into the carb.Tap the carb with a screw driver handle, not pounding on it ,but just keep tapping, sometimes this will be enough vibration to allow the stuck float to release. Check for restriction in the air breather,a mouse house could clog up air flow making too rich a fuel mix.

Ever check the float in the carb? The originals were cork and they do go bad thus not controlling the amount of gas.

the very first thing is to check the oil bath air cleaner for water in it. if below freezing you have ice in there and its blocking the air flow.i have seen and experienced this too. other than that there is a lot to go through. there is no carb adjustments, other than an air valve inside for the idle. and also need to determine if stopping is indead the gas or ignition. best to get a manual cause with all the adjustments a person could write a book.

try starting the tractor while regulating the gas shutoff ,slow the flow if that works out better, then the float is sticking open, also check spark at points they are natorios for caroding excuse the spelling

(quoted from post at 09:05:15 01/18/13) It seems like it is not getting gas at first whirls over and over finally starts and runs real rich.

If I turn the gas on and flip the decomp lever and walk away my MD seems to start better. Not sure if the gas is evaporating in the carb or what, but it seems to like a little time before you start it up.
