D 282 Diesel engine

very reliable if taken care of. they are not even hard starting if kept in good shape. i have one in a 660 that once you hold glow plugs for 40sec. it starts on the second revolution. you just touch the push button and its running, biggest thing is need proper battery's and cables, and glow plugs all working. i have many of these 282's in 560's and 660's and even the 236 in the 460 and the small brother 166 in the 340 and dont have a problem. they are know for head gskt. failure is one down fall.

My 560 diesel starts right up if use glowplugs 30sec >50deg any colder hold 60 sec.If below 30deg 60sec and block heater and starts right up. It is very good on fuel and dependable tractor.

well its not like you replace the gasket and then it blows out next week. they give you a lot of warning. you will see a little compression loss seeping out and oil leaking. i have changed many of these and have not had any of mine give trouble. you can run them for quite a lot of hrs. make sure the sleeve protrusion is in spec. and proper cleaning and gkt installation and torque spec's is the key.
also the heads are known for cracks but who knows how they were operated due to this. cool down time is important.
also do not use starting fluid on these engines, then you are asking for trouble.

While on this topic, any of you guys replace the head bolts when replacing these gaskets?? Had a couple come in with broken bolts over the years-and how many times do you like to re-torque these heads after replacements? I try three if possible. Like your opinions.

We have had a 560 diesel since 1968 and have have very good service from it, we have never blown a head gasket. We have put over 7000 hrs on it and still use it. The only thing we have done is grind the valves once. It always starts if you use the glow plugs. I have also heard that they are hard starting and we have never had any problem with it. It is getting a little tired but still baled several 1000 bales of hay with it last summer and augered 1000s of bushels of corn and beans.
