Zenith Carb for Super M?

Is there a Zenith, or other aftermarket carburetor available for a Super M? I continually have problems getting the M started in the cold. I run a heater on the oil pan, but it doesn"t seem to help. Sometimes, it will fire and then die and then it will never start after that until it sits for a long time. If I somehow catch it on the first firing, I can sometimes keep it running, but it seems like it is a one chance deal. Gasoline will run a stream out of the carb. It has been rebuilt, but has always done this in the cold.

That's just how it is. In cold weather, the trick is to get the engine spinning over and THEN pull the choke, but only briefly. Basically, pull it out and then shove it right back in. Once the engine fires, then work the choke as needed to keep it running.

The only option is to install an engine coolant heater.

For what it's worth, the carburetor you have was built by Zenith, For IHC.

Replacing the carb most likely will not help you any. Common for any engine to be hard to start when it is cold out. One important thing to be sure of is that the oil bath air cleaner be full of oil not water/ice/dirt. Also have a good spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more.

I'm not disputing it, but where did you get that info? I though IH built their own -- A,B,C, etc could have Zenith, and a couple more, but the H,M were completely different.

Actually, the H and M carbs are very similar to the smaller Zeniths. Just bigger.

you wont find zenith name on these carbs cause its their own carb. does not even look like a zenith. zenith was used in the 1930's models tractors.

Those are not troublesome carbs. Whoever rebuilt it screwed it up. Or your fuel system is so full of dirt the needle is being held open. Find a different carb guy. While you're waiting, drain and flush the gas tank, blow everything out, and make your strainer is in good condition.

After I read your post I compared my SM carb and a Super A carb, they look similar, sort of, but probably because they are both carburators, there are a lot of differences, I still vote for IH.

Try a cold start by closing the choke tight shut with the ign off. Then turn it over 2 or 3 compressions. Then open the choke half ways, turn on the ign & it should fire up & stay running. Throttle should be about half way open. You don't ever want it to fire with the choke shut.

I've done several Google searches to find info that would back me up, but I can't find what I know is out there. I know at some point there were rebuild kits for the H and the M that referenced the Zenith D-10, D-11, and maybe the D-12.

Frustrating to say the least when a guy can't find what he knows is out there.
