Hello
I"m looking at a 1566 ih, and I"m not very familiar with this
generation of red tractors. On the rear of the tractor, it has a
fill tube that is similar in design to what John Deere had from
the mid 70"s to the late 80"s. But everybody is telling me that
a 1566"s rear end is filled and checked through a dipstick hole
under the floor of the cab. So what am I looking at on this
1566? It has an old pop can for a cap right now, and if I do
wind up bringing it home, I would like to find the correct cap
for it. Does anybody know what I"m referring to? Thanks

Where is the fill tube?

You sure it's for transmission lube, and not an auxiliary fuel tank? 2-1/2" seems more like a fuel fill.

If it's truly the aftermarket one, your best shot is to find another tractor with the same aftermarket fill tube in a junkyard, and buy the cap. There may be a fuel cap or radiator cap that fits, though, but that'll be a matter of measuring and trial-and-error.

The factory fill/check is in the floor of the cab, right under the park lock handle. You may have to lift the floor mat to find it. Some cabs have a flip-up panel or a flap cut in the floor mat right there.

Two possibilities. If the fill tube is attached to the three point hitch top link bracket it is an after market part to make it easier to add oil, especially on tractors with cabs. The other possibility is that it has a hitch cover from an 86 series tractor. In that case there should also be a small hole for the dipstick tube. Both of these would be in the hitch cover and not the upper link attaching plate.

It's a bigger tube then a dipstick tube, I would say around a
two or two and a half inch tube. It doesn't have threads at all.
Where would I find a cap for an aftermarket add on?

Check someplace that carries truck parts. Sounds like it originally had a rubber plug similar to the one on the engine dipstick.

Is ther a petcock valve on the housing to the left or right of the tube where it goes to housing?
