The good book never gave a maximum. They did at one time give new specs which were right about .032 if I remember right. I actually strived for much less when repairing with new valves and seats. Some times you can get by with flush with head but I liked to go about .010 as I did see one engine leave a very slight impression in piston with flush valves. There are different pistons though that have a slightly deeper recess so only way to know for sure is to test when fully assembled and valves adjusted. That is tricky also because the valve is not at it's closest to piston at tdc, slightly before on intake and after on exh. I have seen then down in head .080 for so and you had to light a fire in the hole to start them. Makes a tremendous difference in starting. |
