Why did "they" use positive ground?

Why did "they" use positive ground vs negative ground? I will be converting my 140 6 volt to 12 volt negative ground, eventually.
 
And a lot of it was just standard
convention of the place and times.
Foreign cars with positive groundwere
common into the early 80s. Europe uses
220v 50hz power in their wall sockets.
It's their standard convention. Doesn't
work any better or worse than our 60hz
power.
