I am looking at buying an IH 966 tractor off of a good friend. He is telling me when their loader was on it, the hydraulics were very slow to operate the loader (they are used to running backhoe loaders not tractor loaders). Now the tractor is for sale without the loader. My thoughts are to change hydraulic filter first, if that doesn't work I am assuming it is the pump getting weak. Can I continue to operate this tractor for cuttting and raking hay with a weak pump or change it right away? Where is the pump location? Any suggestions would be of great help, I am going to look at it again tonight.
Thanks

Tractor hydralics ARE going to be slower than a backhoe/loader.Test pressure with a gauge-prettyeasy.Plug in a 5000# gauge in to a rear hydralic coupler,'deadhead' the lever, watch the reading.Vary the engine speed,a bad pump will vary pressure as engine speed changes.A good pump will pretty much read constant.Changeing hy filter is a good idea. The hydralic pump is on the lower left side of the trans/rearend.betweenthe rearaxle and clutch pedal.Drain the trans oil before removeing pump.Yes you can use the tractor with a weak pump, wont hurt the tractor a bit.

Thanks alot DeltaRed. I am pretty sure I am going to buy this 966. It has decient tires, new 1066 clutch and a new 540 pto shaft installed a year or two ago, plus it is has a case reman. motor installed about 10 yrs ago with only light work being performed with the tractor. I can't pass it up for the price. One reason for them selling it is their new tractor has a cab w/AC. I am a sucker for older red tractors. I am glad to hear that the pump can be replaced w/out splitting the tractor. I will probably go with the 17 gpm pump if it gets replaced.

Thats fine but keep in mind that the filter system is only designed for 14 GPM And thus it will open the bypass and be sucking thru the screen or starving the pump.
