Zerks on the end of rear axles

After taking the hubs off a 300U, I was wondering what the real purpose of the grease zerks on the end of the axles are for? I realize they are used for inserting grease but doesn't the transmission fluid make it to the bearings? Or is this so the bearings aren't run dry until the fluid reaches the end?

The outer bearings are lubed by grease. The grease is less likely to run out on side hills. the grease is also better at keeping dust and mud out of the housing. Every week of real use give it 2 pumps. Jim

I also saw a post where it was pointed out that the grease tends to seal the end of the axel to prevent the oil from running out on a side hill.
