I will be needing some new rears for a 400 soon. Grandpa said the old ones on it now are the originals, but the more I use it the more the cracks in it want to pull apart. Those old tires are hard too.

I planned on getting some Titans since they are made in the US, but I looked at a pair and wasnt that impressed. I'm not a fan of the Firestone 23 degree tires either.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice or good experiences with a brand. If you had a picture of your tires in 15.5x38 and prices you paid, that would be helpful too. I'd like a nice beefy looking tire that is more squared off on the sides. The tractor is used about a week a year for farming, the rest would be parades and tractor rides. Read some things about BKT and Alliance. Not too sure what I think about them being made overseas yet...

Thanks much!

I like Firestone 'traction field and road'.Harvest
King makes a similar tire that is a little
cheaper. The tires pictured are Firestones(13.6x38).Bought two
years ago at $565ea.Pic taken this fall.Sorry, the best 'tire' pic I could find.

None better than Firestone field and road, Titans probably about the same. If you don't want 23 degrees, go to Miller tire and pay shipping. Titan will be 23 degrees also. I would rather pay more and avoid Asian tires. If you want squared off tires be sure you have at least 13 inch wide rims.

I have had the 15.5's on two tractors and was not impressed with them as they arre a low profile and same height as a 13.6 just a bit wider . a 14.9 on a 14 inch rim is a good choice as it is wide and it is tall and ya get a little better foot print on the ground. I should have put the 14.9's on my S/MTA but i went with the flow when i was pulling it and put 16.9's on a 16 inch rim , they are to tall on a S/MTA-450 IMHO. But let me tell ya that with a 20 % increase in RPM's and on the road ya need a chin strap to hold your hat on as it will give ya better them 28 MPH.

I bought these 15.5 Alliance's about 3 years ago. I try to park it inside, but it ends up outdoors %80 of the time. No cracks yet, holding up well. Made in Isreal, which is a close ally of ours...

Yea the All Trac are better then the field and road by a long shot . I do not live tofar from the Firestone ag tire test farm. and before Bridgestone bought out Firestone we use to be able to get the test tires Cheap i mean dirt cheap . And when they came out with the All Trac.and still had the deep tread that was the best top of the line i put a set of All Trac's on my 460 in the 15.5x38 and took off a set of Field and Roads and the traction difference was unbelievable . Myself i will pay the price to the Firestones over anything else as i have seen with my own eyes of different tire brands in the same field and the Firestones seem to do far better .

if your 400 has original rims they would be no wider than twelve inches. that size will pucker up a 15.5 pretty good. you should stick to 14.9 on your rims.

I bought a pair of Firestones for my WD-9 a few months ago and they were cheaper than anything else. I was amazed.

Thanks for all the replies so far. The tractor definitely has 14" rims on it.

I hadnt considered the 14.9's, I guess just because Grandpa always had those 15.5's on it and it did fine. What are my advantages? 14.9's are a little taller but the 15.5's a better puller?

Thanks.

I have been pricing and bought several tires last year and going to this year as well. BKT TR135 would look sharp on your machine, they really have the antique look but are quite beefy. For reference I can get a 16.9x38 bias BKT for 739 mounted. In a firestone traction field and road its 890 and a 23* bias is 1052 mounted.

You will be real happy with the 14.9's and trust me on this as it will me a PULLER . And make her set up and level out . My friends all run that size on there 400 and S/MTA's and they seam to match traction to power far better then the 15.5's did. The 16.9's on mine will give you traction big time BUT it feels like your running down hill all the time. I do not lack power , but like everybody else i could use MORE as mine only has 60 Hp. and extra 25 or 35 Hp. would be nice but i am not going to rebuild to get it as long as it runs they way it does and i can blow silage up a 80 foot silo with out a problem .

Are you putting 45 feet of alfalfa into one windrow? Will your baler pick up that "double windrow"?

Where can a person get Harvest King tires? Im in SW Minnesota and I havent seen any of those brand for a long time. I was always happy with them.

Oh and by the way, according to my tire supplier, Firestone has discontinued the 11.2x36 in the field and road 23 degree bar. He said there are still tires out there, mostly back east and he steered me to titans for my 200 project.
I haven't confirmed it with firestone, but this guy is pretty sharp and has never sttered me wrong. Price quoted for the Firestones 545 each plus freigh to AZ. and 500ea for the titans

Depends on 'how heavy' the hay is...I can usually pick up 2 12 ft windrows, has to be pretty heavy hay not to.In light hay the rig will put 4 12' windrows together.I am running a CIH 8530 inline baler(14x18).

All I can say is that ONE time since we got into the tractor hobby we went cheap and bought a set of Titans for our JD 70 (14.9 x 38). It gets used a tad for this and that, but other than plowing on plow days, a couple parades, some shows and an occasional stock pull it doesn't work hard, always kept in doors, tires on a dry surface when parked...within 3 yrs significant sidewall cracking...within 4 one split on the sidewall at a crack. It now wears Firestones like every other tractor we do.
