I bought a 706d over the weekend. it had been sitting for bout 3 years. tractor has 1386 original hours. i but 2 12 volt batts in it tryed starting it warming glow plugs would just crank. i pulled it bout 100 feet and started. it run pretty good with just a slight miss sound in the intake. idrove it bout 20 mile home never missed a beat. i shut it off and tryed restarting it warming glow plugs but just smoked. i pulled valve cover off to see if i had a sticking valve but didnt so i adjusted them 2 or 3 of them were a little tight stayin open?. then i tested the glow plugs and they are HOT and still will not start. only thing i kno of beside pullin head is checkin the static timming but not sure that would be the issue i have. the only thing i can think is the couple tight valves are burnt causing compression lost? any info help suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Scott

On a D282 at this time of the year it takes sometimes over a min of glow plugging . and it is suppose to have two 6 volt batterys . It must not have a T/A if your pull starting it . Slow cranking speed due to a slow turniing starter will not help in starting. Low cranking pressure of the injection pump is another cause . as for the miss this is somewhat common when they are cold . If it does not go away when warmed up in say five ten min. then Huston you got a problem. Could be a bad injector, could be a bad precup , could be bad valve could be a cracked head , could be low compression on a hole , could be a cracked block. Lots of could be's

I have the best luck putting the throttle at idle and count to 60 then crank the engine holding the glow plug button. Ive woked on many over the years and if you have decent glow plugs, fresh fuel and compresion it should start. Unlike the 460 diesels that came new from the factory with a log chain in the tool box that had a part number on it. Most guys had to replace the chain once a year!!

If it fired right off when you pulled it, then cranking speed is your #1 issue.

Try replacing those ratty old undersize battery cables with new 0ga, running separate + lines from each 12V battery direct to the solenoid, and separate - lines from each 12V battery direct to one of the bolts on the starter mount.

Sure it's not the nut behind the wheel? HIYA SCOTTY! Are you going to look at the timing tonight? Call me if you need a hand.

It very may be that lol I'm goin to try got to go look at the other 706d when I get off ill give you a shout bud

Does it slobber fuel out of the exhaust? Our 560 had to be pull started a very short distance all the time, but it also slobbered. New piston rings..better compression...and now it starts great, but it could have other issues too.
