Brakes on SMTA

I have replaced the discs. The brakes grab, and jerk. In order to alleviate the problem I drive the tractor down the lane to the blacktop and run it forward and reverse with the brakes on and then it behaves normally. I know that everyone is going to jump on the rust problem, but this is a tractor that gets used daily and I don't see it rusting up over night. I wish I had band brakes. Thanks, Ellis
 
Check this potential solution. Total internal clearance needs to be in the .030 to .060" range for good operation. As the brakes wear, the surfaces of the housing, the expander,and the flat surface of the pinion carrier all wear at the same time the friction disks wear. Because they look good, they are assumed to be in spec.
If the disks, expander, pinion carrier plate, and housing are a loose stack, the balls and springs and particularly the linkage to the expander from the pull rod going to the pedal spring will be at a bad angle for correct operation.
The application pressure becomes higher, the disks lock easier, and they become inconsistent.
The measurement of the stack is pretty easy in that the disks and expander are one thickness when stacked up on the bench, and the housing is another depth to where it hits the tractor"s carrier bearing plate. The dimensions above, and clean shiny balls with dry lubricant (I like PTFE spray that drys to powder) make good brakes.
Machining the housing mating surface to get the dimension is a pretty simple machine shop task. Best of luck with it. Jim
 
Good addition. Using a dremel and small stones. Or a flat file if you are good with a file, can remove some burrs and wear edges, but if more than .008 or so the wear might need to be modified at the new disk by polishing (or turning on a lathe) the female splines to allow full movement of the new disks.
