changing oil

Just a general question. It is best to warm the engine up on the bn to change the oil?
Also should I wait till it gets warmer since it is in an unheated barn?

Thanks

Todd

Its always been my rule of thumb to warm the engine if your not using the tractor on a daily basis then wait for spring.

I always warm up my engine before dropping the oil just so it flows easier and gets most of it out. I changed my super A's today in an unheated shed and it doesn't make a difference as far as I can tell. Main thing is to let it run for a bit with the new oil so it's at proper operating temp to make sure it's fully lubricated when you shut it off.

Well think about it. If you drain the oil when the engine is cold you will have a lot of junk sitting in the engine since the oil is cold and will not drain well. If you think about it this way. Which is easier to spread warm butter or cold butter. Same holds true with oil so which do you want to drain warm oil or cold oil that sticks to things

Yes, warm the engine up.

If the engine is really dirty I'll drain a little oil off and replace with kerosene. Let it come up to temp and then drain.

I usually leave the plug out overnight so all the old oil drains.

Outside temp doesn't make any difference. Unless your in the Arctic or something.

There are more opinions about what to use and how to use it regarding oil than most other subjects. I will add mine.
The most important concurns with oil is quility oil changed regularly and haveing a filter. The trade offs of cold and hot drains pretty much make both satisfactory. If it's drained cold more oil leaves the engine simply because all oil has drained back from upper end. Having warm oil from top end draining into and agitating the oil pan could dislodge and carry away sediment. If an engine is gooked up,it's douptful it can be meaningfuly cleaned by flushing. Fact is circulating a thin fluid could possiably delay oil pump prime or fail to prime altogeather before damage is done. I base the last statment partly on rebuilders packing pump with vasoline or similar to assure prime at first start up.

at the shop we alway let the engine come to to operating temp, then drain the oil, reason for this is to have all the particles in suspension in the oil, not settled in bottom of pan just my opinion
