Choosing Gasket Material

I've noticed different weights of gasket paper and cork material. What applications are the different thicknesses intended for?

The amount of pressure is best delt with by thin gaskets. Uneven mating surfaces and low pressure are best delt with by thicker gaskets. Material and compression of the fasteners that hold it together depend on a certain amount of compliance to assure good seal. Material choice is also based on what is being sealed some materials are dissolved by the flow through the passages being sealed up. Some gaskets are also thickness shims and are designed to be used in a stack or selected to make bearings preload, or gears mesh correctly.
