local dealer has a 856 gas at a reasonable price . I would like to buy it and install a 5.9 cummins. have any you guys done this and what problems would I have. Is it possible? thanks.

Its possible, its been done. But it would be MUCH cheaper to just get a diesel tractor.Even if the engine is 'free' and right in front of you,'conversions' are expencive!BTDT

Why would you want to 'kill' a semi-rare tractor? If you must do something like that,go find one with a bad engine.

if you want to learn more about 5.9 in an IH give me a call. I have done several of these and they may say they are expensive, but fuel savings will pay for it in no time. Call and ask for Ron at 563 382 4530 anytime M-F 8-5 or sat 8 to noon Central time

An 856 gas? Boy, I would buy it and keep it like it is. They are like honest politicians - I hear they exist but no one I know has ever laid eyes on one personally!

Let me add that we had an 856D. That was one of the best tractors I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with. If the engine you put in it is reliable you would have a tractor that you didn't have to wrench on for a good 20 years. Still wish I had "Big Red" back.
