Question for Old F-20

Dear Sir: I have studied your response to my question about the priority valve on my 450 L.P. You said that you plumbed in an aftermarket priority valve, right? I have looked over my old one, and I would like to ask you how exactly you did that, because it looks somewhat complicated...did you leave the old valve in place and just remove the guts before you plumbed in the aftermarket valve? Thanks so much, Hugh

Here is a picture of how my setup is. Let me say first that although my steering is 100% hydraulic, you will still plumb a behlen the same way. you will have the pressure line in and return line out.

the pic is fairly self explanatory however aftermarket priority dividers have a pressure relief port in case there is a spike in pressure. This will be the fittin at the upper right of the valve thats at a 45 dgree angle. This linewill T into the RETURN line out of you steering motor on its way back to the res tank.

As far as by passing the factory valve there are two things that can happen. You can get lucky like i did and actually leave it in place and not have to monkey with it since it didnt work in the first place. my neighbor did his 450 this way and he said that although his vavle didnt work he had to take it off and 'gut it' so the fluid would pass through.

hopefully this help you out some. if you have nay more questions, just ask ill try to answer them

Man, your 450 L.P. is radical looking! And well-thought-out! Let me look this over real close and see what I want to do...thanks for offering your help and advice. I think that that's the most "righteous" 450 I've ever seen! I'll be writing back after I pay a visit to Bearing Service and Supply, the local hydraulic mecca. Thanks again, Hugh

I would like to ask also, to help clear my head over how I want to tackle this: what exactly does a priority valve do? Does it reduce pressure, does it restrict flow? Thanks.

think of it as a hydraulic traffic cop. it doesnt reduce pressure, but it driects flow. the fluid coming into the valve gets sent out to the priority port first (specif GPM) and the remainder then gets sent out the other port (goes to hyd system)

the one i have on mine is a 1.5 GPM flow to the steering, then the rest goes to the vavlve stack for the hydra touch

Great answer F-20. I would just add that it is generally used for steering and other systems that can't be without fluid or it will create a dangerous situation. Hence the steering is the priority port so it gets all the fluid it needs first and then any extra gets sent to the remotes.

No problem. i fought mine for a while and finally got everything figured out so if you have any questions i should be able to help you!

(quoted from post at 06:22:33 01/04/13) Why does it have hydraulic steering?

thats what was on there when i got it, i dont know

i can tell you this, at dead idle on concrete i can turn the wheel lock to lock with one finger. plus, theres no bump steer with it

Old F-20 What did you do for the steering system on the 450 to make all hydraulic? I need to pay some attention to my 450's steering, and it might be a good up date.

it was like that when i bought it.

only two parts you would need would be a cyl (steering) and a steering motor like off a combine
