Dang cold..

The cold sure can take the fun outta farming ! Frozen stock tank cuz heater failed, almost dead tractor battery so wouldnt start, then frozen PTO lever wouldnt engage til warmed with the torch, but then the spreader apron was frozen tight anyway, one burst water hose in the barn, slipped on the ice and bashed my knee, and so forth ! Argh, dont ever let me complain about the summer heat again ! lol Tough day, I am beat and chilled to the bone !

I try to look at cold and hot this way. I have been up to and under the Arctic circle and boy was that cold Yep in the winter. But on the other end of the scale I have been to Egypt in the summer and boy was that hot 120 plus in the shade and to top that off we had to wear our Dress whites. Both while I was in the navy so I try to remember those times when I think it is hot or clod

Good reply. He talked about farming in the cold and you answered about your experience on a submarine 40 years ago.

Always said you can put on enough clothes to stay warm in the cold, but can't always take off enough to stay cool in the heat. Although, come to think about it, I was on top of a mountain at a radar site in WY with -45 and 70mph wind... that was mighty cold.

Breaking ice is a daily chore. Couple of the stock tanks are out in the open. Unless the cows came in and drank later in the afternoon they could have 6 inches of ice on them in the morning.

Or if they don't come right in and drink, they could be iced back over within the hour.

Dad bought one of those waterers that had a big tile dug into the ground about 5' and the heat from the ground kept it from freezing. Cattle soon learned to push the big ball down to get to the water. This was in NE Iowa where it got fairly cold. I never thought it would work, but it did. Before that he used a cast iron kerosene heater in a "banked up" stock tank, which might not have worked in all places because only one end of the tank was open.
