Hi, I have purchased a 1943 McCormick w9 that has a 15-34 tire on one side and a 16.9-34 Tire on the other. The fenders are straight, and the rims are mounted correctly, but the tires rub on the fenders. Also, how do I find out if it is a gas or distillate? Any thoughts? Thanks.

The tires are "the same" size. The 16.9-34 is just the new version of the 15-34. They are stock tires. They shouldn't rub. It is common to put 18.4-34s on and they do not rub.

To find if it is distillate or gas you could post the serial number. There will be some letters on the back that tell you things like that ie W12B means electric start and swinging drawbar If it has a hole in the hood for the starting tank or radiator shutters those are also good clues.

that is the correct tires for it . dont know where they would rub as i have never saw a problem with the tires. i have one on steel also that has been cut down to 32" tires. possible to post pic? some people even put the 18.4x34 on them so curious where there rubbing. are they on factory rubber or cutoff's?
code on serial # should help with distillate model.

yes, and the 15 was replaced by the 16.9 some of them older tires even have both sizes right on them saying that, "16.9-34 replaces 15-34"

15-34 is now 18.4-34......14-34 is now 16.9-34. 15.5-38 was a completly new size low profile, light carcass tire to provide greater tread width but same height (circumference) as a 13.9-38 or 12-38 but using a much wider rim.

Hi

I hate to start an agrument, but I think the 16.9 x 34 replaced the 14 x34 and the 18.4 x 34 replaced the 15 x 34. Check your rims to see where the off sets are. Rim might be mounted backwards or the rims came off a different tractor that had 34 in rubber. With the proper rims both size of tires will fit and have good clearance between the tires and fenders I can't say for sure but I think some of the early 9's came with 32 in rubber and I think 32 in rubber was used on some of the industrial 9's.
Cheers

Sorry, you are totally right (not that you doubted it) I forgot that 15.5 was a new size.

To the best of my knowledge:

The old sizes used dashes, like 15-34.
The new sizes use an X, like 16.9x34.

On the old sizes, the tire size was the same as the rim width. So, a 15-34 would go on a 15" wide rim.
