460 overhaul

I have the engine apart except for two sleeves that will not budge. I did get enough pressure on one to crack it, but I cannot even get the sleeve to peel away. I figured they must have been put in with some sort of sealer. Reading through old posts i see there are different bore sizes and most kits are standard size only. (i was hoping to just buy a kit from this site to help them ouy) My block is stamped CECCDA. With my two stuck sleeves would I be better off going to a 291? What would that all entail? This tractor is used to farm with so I do want to do it right. Thanks

I had mine removed at a machine shop. Machinest said he had to peel then out. I believe the cylinders have to be bored for 291, someone will correct me if that is not the case.

Did you weld a bead vertically down each cylinder wall? Sometimes that works.

Sounds like they suffered from a case of dissimilar metal bonding; machine shop time.

Best of luck! Don"t crack that block!

I am assuming that this is a gasser , So yes the block has to be bored and this solve the problem with getting the corect sleeves . BUT you have to get the 263 to 291 sleeves as the upper contour bore is different on the block verses what came AS a 291 from the factory . Then your going to need a 560-706 crank . Then next myself i would have a pressure plate reworked with a little heavier springs since a 460 has a smaller clutch and you may have an issue with slipage due to the increase in Hp. Next you will need to get a dist. out of a 291 and some carb work or a carb off a 291 .There will be a definite increase in power like in the upper 70's to lower 80's.

Thanks for the clarification. Do I have to have anything done to my head? I have a crank and rods from a 263 out of a combine, so all I need to find is a dist and carb. If I sent you my carb would you be able to rework it or am I better off finding one off a 291 ?

I had a couple sleeves stuck in my 460 d when I overhauled it last year and I took an old gasket scraper and dished (rounded) the blade to fit the contour of the cylinder wall so not to gouge them and hammered the thing down the wall and chipped the old sleeves out. It's a crude method but it worked. Be sure to match your "tool" to a sleeve that's out before starting in.
