1066 Hydro, my offer price failed, why?

So this weekend I made an offer on the 1066 Hydro. The tires are junk, one rear was flat with the sidewall blown out. Both rims rusted out at the valve stem. Did not even start and run it, trust him saying it runs and moves just fine. He asked if I had a chance to look the machine over, I said yes. He then told me he would begin by telling me where he valued the tractor at, and that he felt it was worth 7,500 because he hears Hydros are collectable. Then he asks what I was thinking as far as price. I was a little shocked at his price, but none the less told him, 3,750 being that it needed new rear tires and tubes from the get go. He did not bat an eye, and said, no. He was going to stay firm on 7,500 because he feels it would easily sell quickly at that price. So the discussion ended as I thought 3,750 was actually a generous offer. Not sure how I could have negotiated differently. Thoughts?

you cant bargain with an idiot. given the condition it was described at your offer was very fair. he's never gonna sell it but he's probably too stupid to realize it too

I've run into alot of guys just like the 1066 owner. They have a crazy price that they think there tractor, boat, snow mobile, garden tractor etc is worth and until they get that price it will just sit there and rot into the ground. Not much you can do about it other than move on and try to get the next one you find. Good luck. Kent

Honestly the man did you a huge favor by not accepting your offer. With his attitude and the fact that the tractor wouldn't start, you can bet there are countless other things wrong with the tractor. You should be able to find a nice one in running condition for less money than it would take to buy this tractor and make it a reliable runner.

Because he saw they were $_____ on Tractor House and his is a "collector" Hydro tractor.

Some people don't realize how expensive it is to get their POS up to running, trustworthy condition again.

I agree, the guy did you a favor.

In the condition described I think you were overpaying by $2000 to $2700. It's worth its weight in scrap. I know if I were selling a running tractor I’d start it and show how well it ran – best case is he thinks it will run with some work, worst case he knows it won’t ever run again and is out to nail you.

Running hydros are collectable to those who want a big toy; they are useful to those with loaders and have some haying needs. Nonrunning hydros are vicious animals that eat massive quantities of cash.

I had the same suspicion, ha ha. That he looked on TractorHouse to come up with that price. Though he should understand that is what those tractors are "listed" for, and not what they are "selling" for.

You offered what you thought it was worth considering it's condition, and he turned it down. Nothing you could have done different. I have had similar experiences, like the guy that thought his 22-36 with a stuck engine was worth $2500 and a WA40 with a stuck engine $2300...

Amichael, I agree with the others the owner did you a big favor by not taking your offer. @ $7500 that tractor had better start and drive, while totally discounting the tires. It will be hard for a regular person without some specific equipment to get that tractor loaded. If someone hires it done that person will soon get more in it, that it is worth just to get it running.
IF You are bent on owning this tractor........
Ask him to put Batts in it, & get it running First! IF... it runs and moves forward and reverse it can be loaded under its own power!!! then give his $7500 If you feel generous Pay for the batts in the final trade! (batts only) nothing else!
Hope this helps.

PS In Tractor House Today there are a a good double hand full of 1066 gear drives in the $7500 to $10,000 and 2 or 3 less than $7500 Hope this helps.

He might get it . That engine and transmission are in the collectible class. Would I pay that, no. Would not if I could.

(quoted from post at 13:32:00 12/26/12) Pete, what is your correction knowing that it is a 1066?

1026 was the lowest production numbers of the Hydro tractors, also first with a Turbocharged engine.

Definitely the most collectible Hydro ever built.

If an ad is around for more than a couple days, the tractor is almost always way overpriced.

You don't see the ads for the tractors that *DO* sell.

I was interested in a hydro on craigslist a few years ago that caught my eye, don't remember the model. I ran hydro construction equipment a long time ago and really liked it. I called the local case IH dealer to see if parts were available for a rebuild in case it was needed. The cost to rebuild a hydro was unbelievable.

Probably did you a favor.By the way you described it you dont have to buy problems as they are usually free. I have bought several 10s and 14s and they are a good buy if good.Hydros have their place but if need repair Roland Hydro told me $5000 would usually fix one.A fair price is when the seller thinks it wasnt quite enough and buyer thinks it is a little too high.In this case the seller has been reading to many Tractor House ads.
