IH 284 engine swap

I recently got a IH284 for free. It runs but smokes and has low oil pressure. I see parts are scarce. So I was thinking about an engine swap. Perhaps a Kubota. Does anyone have any expirience with this?

Why wouldn't you have the engine rebuilt? Kent

The tractor should either have a Mazda 1.2 liter gas engine or a Nissan 1.6 liter diesel. Both of those engines were likely used in other tractors made in Japan for US companies.

Rebuilding the engine is not a good option. New parts are not really availible. Some parts dealers are selling used parts at a price higher than you would expect to pay for new. Yes it is a Mazda gas engine and they even came in cars. But that was in the 69-72 era and most were sold in Japan and Europe. Not many left around. Friend of mine is stationed in Japan. He checked with local mechanics and could find nothing. Remember the Japanese came up with the idea of planned obsolesence during WWII.
