pulling the governor time

It is now time to think about pulling the governor, it is to the point of lifting the tractor off the bolster. Several have said to be careful to not rotate it. Is there some trick to being able remove it and clean up and get it back on without it turning?
Next question of course is how hard will it be to time the distributor when I do rotate it?
Tomorrow I will need to set down and finalize my list and order parts so the last question for now is will I be farther ahead to buy a complete seal and casket set and put the one I don’t need back for another time or try and find the one or two individual that have the ones I think I need.
Thank you for all the help and have a great and merry Christmas

What are you repairing and why. Pull the bolster for what. Need model and make of tractor for answers to your question.

Dont turn the engine over after its apart. Before removing the housing pull the dist cap and observe the direction the rotor is pointed so when you put the assy back together make sure the rotor is still pointed the same and you will be fine. If you had a mag it would be more important. While its apart mite want to replace the bottom seal on the steering sector as it probably is leaking after all the yrs. Mite need to replace the bushings also in the sector and seals.fill with 90wt when done. You will need a puller to remove the pulley as they are a press fit and check for a set screw in that pulley as some had one. You dont need to remove the gaov itself just the housing. I would also replace the gov spring while its apsrt. If the pulley is worn where the seal sits get a speedy sleeve before putting it back on. Most of the time the old seal has worn a groove where the seal rides.
