How to clean rusty intake manifold

I just picked up a good functioning intake manifold for my SMD. The butterfly valves work great. There is some rust in the intake passages and am leary of not getting everything out and having something go into the motor at some point. What would be the best safe way to get this out of there? I considered acid dipping maybe but don't want to ruin the shaft seals.

Thanks,
Dan

Give your local machine shot a call they would have so ideas. There is a good machine shop in fredrick across the street from hb duval, hb duval (ih dealer) highly recomends them. Jim.

He is in Argyle, WI.

Ice blasting would be perfect for that, but it isn't very easy to find somebody that does it. I will keep thinking.

Machine shop hot tank is probably the best way to clean it. Doing that will also prove if it is in fact a good manifold and does not have any rust holes which would cause you fits if it has them and you did not know they where there

He said he wants to keep the seals etc functional.

Ya hot tank any and all seals would need to be replaced but is as rusty as he said I would want to replace the seals any how since they would be dried out and good chance bad any how and could give him fits as for vacuum leaks and odd running engine

I haven't been able to locate the butterfly shaft seals anywhere or I would like to just replace them.

Actually, I just found a source for the control shaft seals.

So if I don't have to worry about these seals, is hot tanking it the way to go? Does that remove all surface rust? Any idea on the approximate cost?

Thanks,
Dan

Isn't that engine the same as what was used in the TD-6 Crawler?? If it was then I may know a place that could get them for you here in Missouri. I know of a salvage place not far from me where he has only crawlers and last time I was up there he had 10 plus TD-6 parts machines

We buy EVAPORUST from Fastenal to derust both steel and cast iron parts. It is a product made from Sugar beets and is non toxic. It has done a good job on some lightly rusted parts. If you can remove the heavy rust first, it may work out for you.

How about "soda blasting"? Any soda residue left would not be as bad as sand or glass beading. Maybe that would not take hevy rust off, but they use it to remove paint without destroying metal, even aluminum.

Washing soda electrolosis. Simple, easy, and very much a "do it yourself" effort. Walmart stocks the washing soda. 12 volt Battery charger. 5 Gallon plastic bucket, and a clean piece of mild steel.

If you want details, either search the archives for "electrolosis" or ping me on PM.
