How do they break the hubs?

On 3 tractors that I have, two of them have large chunks broken out of the hub, near the axle clamp. (MD and a 350). On the M, it appears there was a crack starting, and someone had welded it up 50 years ago. Since then, for 45 years that I know of, we've never had any more trouble with it, and the M was our front line tractor from the sixties to the late eighties. I don't know the histories of the MD or the 350, they were broken when I bought them. Thanks, Fritz

Sometimes they get stressed from being in the mud and then being towed out at an angle. Putting a 2 row picker in them with the wheels set out can take out wheels, and trash/break axles. Jim

The hubs often fail when the hub clamp bolts work loose. The wheel rocking on the axle then overstresses the casting which causes chunks of the hub to break away.

I broke one in march, spreading gravel. I was pushing my H too hard, so it was my fault. I had a great time changing out the wheel center with the rear scoop fully buried in a 22 yard pile of gravel!

After studying the carnage, it was obvious that the clamp bts worked loose and allowed the axle to spin, busting the center.

That is the part you screwed up. It wasn't due to working the H too hard.
