New Farmall 400 Diesel owner ?'s

Hi all,

First time farmall owner here (normally a JD guy).

Had a quick question. What is the correct steering wheel for a 1955 F400 Diesel w/o power steering? Is it the standard wheel with exposed spokes, or a totally covered wheel with the IH center Cap?

Thanks!

Chuck McDonald

Welcome to the other side. Now you can really farm all. LOL
Exposed. I bought mine from steel wheel ranch.
I also have a 55 gasser and love it, eventually it will get power steering.

Thanks for the help.

Exposed spokes. But make sure the shaft is the correct one for the appropriate wheel. Keyed is for exposed and splined is for covered. My F300 has a F350 hyd. tower and steering shaft (not sure how that happened) and it required the covered.

Chuck, its the uncovered type and not sure but I think the diesel had a 4 spoke wheel. That's what's on my 400. My MD and SMTAD both have the 3 spoke steering wheel. My 400 gas has a 3 spoke.

Have some IH info on that. Srarting early in 1955 if specified the standard 18 inch steering wheel could be deducted on a 400 tractor order and a 20 inch 4 spoke steering wheel for less steering effort specified. Goes on to say its the same steering wheel used on SW6TA tractors.
Attachment was # 363170R91 and the 20 inch steering wheel # 557282R91.
