Hello guys,
What good bad ugly can you offer to tell me about this model year. I learned it is a Hydro, and was made aware that is probably a desireable thing. Other than that I know it is started on ether, as it was manufactured without glow plugs.
Most glass is broken out, fenders dented and rusted. one flat tire. New starter and battery.
No ac or heater to my knowledge. Believe the engine and transmission are good condition. Doing my homework on looking up sale prices on sold 1066's of similar condition, trying to come up with an offer price.

If the engine needs ether to start, it is NOT in "good condition." It should start on its own with nothing more than maybe a couple of hours with the block heater plugged in.

The hydro is nice if you use the tractor for loader work or vegetable crops, but it is NOT for constant heavy tillage. Hydro is not cheap to fix.

Tractor sounds like it's in bad shape to me.

Tractors usually get parked and left to rot because they stop moving, not because the farmer gets bored with them. Keep that in mind before you go assuming that the engine and hydro are in good shape.

Fixed up it is a pretty bullet-proof tractor that will give you many years of service. However, even if the owner sells it *CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP*, you will have way more into it than it is worth. Then you need to consider if you will get enough use out of the tractor to justify fixing it up. Also consider that even if you do put a bunch of money into the tractor it's still going to be cheaper than a new one.

Would a fella be wrong to offer $3,750. Barring it runs and drives. Gotta start the price negotiation somewhere.

keep inmind that to replace the hydro unit its right around the 5000 dollar mark just for the part, not including any labor to take it apart

It sounds like a parts donor tractor. Does the owner have an asking price yet? If not an offer of scrap price plus 25% would be reasonable. Maybe 6 ton X $200 ton x 1.25 = $1500.

As others have said, even if you get it cheap it will still be a money pit if you try to fix it up.

If it is a hydro it may have some value as a collectable I'm not sure how many 1066 Hydros were made but as popular as the gear drive ones were and not so popular any of the hydros were it is bound to be a fairly low production tractor. The hydro is a liability in my book, none of the ones in our area are known for their reliability. But if you are looking for a tractor to fix and use keep looking you can do better.

In my part of the world( eastern Canada) 66 series hydros are popular and known to be great old tractors. Back when they were built farmers loved them for digging potatoes, planting potatoes, cutting hay, loader work and blowing snow. Now days some smaller farmers still love them amd home owners buy them for snow blowing and loader work aroumnd the yard.
If you can get the 1066 for a good price, i'd jump at the chance to restore a hydro. they started great and had lots of power.Around here you would pay 5-6 grand for the tractor you described. Good luck in what ever you decide. Kent

If it starts (withOUT ether!!!), runs, and drives (forward and reverse, both ranges, with the brakes engaged), start at $2500 and work from there.

Remember even if it doesn't need major mechanical work, you're going to have to put upwards of $4000 worth of tires on it right off the bat.

I personally don't like a hydro like this tractor for a loader tractor, there are only 2 hands, and if you are trying to move the loader and the direction or speed and steer, well, I have problems!

A good tractor for a loader tractor is one with a gear shift and reverser IMHO.

If you look at it tell them not to warm it up, you want to see how it starts cold. Run the throttle wide open before cranking, they may not know to do that.
