1456 hydro filter change

Hey guys I need some help my brother bought a 1456
this summer and the steering has always seemed tight
until it warms up a little, it also has a whining or
buzzing sound from 1500 rpm on. I was reading and
everyone says check the oil and change the filter. I
changed the filter last nite, which had a bunch of
junk in it, but I don"t know how to get the air out
of the system. I did buy a manual for it but I
cannot for the life of me find it right now.

I did start it and the steering seemed a little
better and wasn"t making as much noise. However it
was still tight and the three point arms went up and
down kinda slow and hesitantly, they would be coming
up and stop and then come up some more til they got
to the top.

You don't have to bleed anything, just work it back and forth. You may have damaged the o-ring on the filter housing and you then will suck air. Easy to tell on the hitch. Just raise it up and down a few times, leave it about half way up and then jump on it. It should be solid, if bouncy at all it has air. Since it is a single action cyl on hitch, if it does have air you will need to raise it and completely lower it a few times , AFTER, you are sure you are no longer sucking air. If o-ring is not problem, you may want to overfill the transmission about 5 gals to cover a couple of points inside where air can be drawn in . What kind of junk was in filter. Metal or just sludge. Moisture in oil in cold weather will clog filter immediately.

When you say o ring on the filter do you mean the hyrdaulic filter? I put a new o ring on the retainer that goes in first put the filter into it and then put the relief screen on the filter and put it all together. The stuff that was in the filter looked like little pieces of gasket or something, almost looked like tiny pieces of leather but not any metal.

I guess I got one model year ahead of my self. The o-ring I meant would be on the separate round cover for the filter BUT, the 56 series didn't use that separate cover and you have to take the whole tear drop off with a gasket. SOOO, did you replace that gasket as they can also suck in air. The other 0-ring behind the filter inside should be a square cut one but not a big deal either way. The pieces you describe, were they very thin and red. The bushings in the draft control torsion bar have a red nylon lining on them and I have seen them show up in hydraulic filters.

Change the Hytran if its not a caramel color, put in at least 20 gallons. System should purge air by itself, filter intake is at lowest point but it also is where ice/water & debris goes.

I worked on it some more last nite, turns out the main gasket for the cover was leaking a little so I took it back off and put some sealant on it, and I did put a new square o ring behind the retainer. The pieces were small and thin but cant tell if they were red or not. They almost seem like parts of the filter, like it started to come apart. The oil looks good and I added enough to bring it about a gallon above the full mark. Started the tractor and it sounds better, I can only here the buzzing slightly and the steering is a little better but its still not perfect, hopefully I ll get a chance this weekend to run it for a while to see if it makes a difference. Not sure what else to check for steering.
