IH 424 Gas, suddenly stalled and won't start, pulled distributor cap and distributor shaft not spinning when cranking, removed distributor and it seems to be fine, what could be the problem inside the governor?

Take that dist apart. There are 2 gears in it. Sounds like one is stripped.

I can spin the gear and shaft on the distributor and it moves but when the distributor is mounted to the governor it does not move.

If the distributor drive is removed from the governor mounting plate you will see a slotted drive hub on the rearward side of the governor drive sprocket. If this is not turning with the engine, the cam drive (or at least the governor/distributor drive gear) is stripped. or other serious internal drive issue. The gears are directly associated with the cam drive and crankshaft pinion gear. Jim

Probably cam gear. I may have one.

So once the distributor is removed I will need to look into the governor and see if the cam gear is turning? Is this correct? Thanks for all the information.
