300 Utility starting issue

I have a IH 300 Utility and have a issue starting it. It does not start most time with the key, I cleaned all the cable connections, ground connections, etc and still no luck. It will start up fine if I use a screw driver and cross the terminals on the soleniod. Is this a key issue or solenoid issue, I would not think it is a battery or starter issue as it turns over fine and starts when I use the screwdriver. It sounds like the solenoid is trying to engage when I turn the key, but nothing. This is a 6 volt system.
Thanks

If you jump from the battery connected terminal, to the small S terminal and it starts, it is the little wiring, or the key/switch. If you jump from big terminal to big terminal, it is likely that Relay. Jim

Jim,
I am jumping from the battery terminal(top lug) on the soleniod to the lower smaller terminal. There is a small wire on the same lug the battery cable connects to. This little wire I assume must go back up to the key switch? It turns off fine with the key.

The 300 series (IIRC) has funky key and no start button. (more like a car). If you trace the wire from the S terminal on the relay. back up to the ign sw, you will either find it to be OK, or it will be disconnected or loose. If not, the key switch needs to be replaced. Jim

I to would say it is most likely the starter contact on your key switch. Several years ago my 300 Utility did the same. I fixed the problem by installing the IH 350/450 black button starter switch in the cigeratte lighter hole. At that time my CIH dealer didn't have a replacement key switch. My original key switch still seems work OK for the ignition. Al
